Religious Education

Religious Education (RE) is a vital part of our basic curriculum, helping our youngest learners make sense of the world around them and develop a deep sense of identity and belonging. While RE is a statutory entitlement for all registered pupils rather than a component of the National Curriculum, we proudly follow the Hertfordshire Agreed Syllabus for RE (2023–2028). Through an inquiry-based "worldviews approach," we introduce our children to Christianity alongside other principal world religions and non-religious worldviews represented in Great Britain, such as Judaism, Islam, and Hinduism. In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and Key Stage 1, our teaching is designed to be highly active, creative, and relatable; we teach RE to cultivate curiosity, empathy, and respect. By exploring big thematic areas like Beliefs and Practices, Identity and Belonging, and Symbols and Actions, our children engage with sacred stories, handle religious artefacts, and explore festivals. Ultimately, we teach RE to lay the foundation for our children to grow as kind, open-minded global citizens who appreciate and celebrate the rich diversity of our local community and the wider world.

The Right of Withdrawal from Religious Education

In England, parents and carers have the right to withdraw their children from Religious Education. This right of withdrawal exists for all pupils in all types of schools. Parents and carers also have the right to withdraw their child from part of RE and can do so without giving any explanation.

Religion and belief have become more visible in public life in recent years, making it important that all pupils should have an opportunity to engage in RE.  However, the parent of a pupil may request that they be excused from all or part of the religious education (RE) provided.

Parents who wish to withdraw their children from RE should be aware of its aims and what is covered in the RE curriculum and that they are given the opportunity to discuss this if they wish. It should be made clear whether the withdrawal is from the whole RE curriculum or specific parts of it.

If you wish to withdraw your child from RE, or parts of RE, please contact Mrs Gardner.
